The January transfer window is already a record-breaker and Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United are as busy as ever.

Monaco's Thomas Lemar, Leicester's Riyad Mahrez are top of the list while an early move for summer arrival Naby Keita is still a possibility. Manchester United are attempting to bridge the 15 point gap at the top and are looking at PSG's Lucas Moura to do it. Jose Mourinho also wants a left-back with Tottenham's Danny Rose and Juventus' Alex Sandro targets. Pep Guardiola is top of the tree but is seemingly still not satisfied with Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez set to become a Manchester City player within days.

MANCHESTER CITY NEWS Should Manchester City sign Alexis Sanchez now? Is he worth the money? Do they even need him? Here Mark Critchley argues that they should, he is and they do.

Manchester City are right to want Alexis Sancchez now, even if his signing is not essential

MANCHESTER UNITED NEWS Henrikh Mkhitaryan is willing to return to Borussia Dortmund this window, with the Bundesliga club also keen on a move for the playmaker. But there is currently a considerable gap between their positions on potential wages. That should make a summer move more likely.
Jose Mourinho would sanction a sale if the right deal comes along, and Dortmund looks like that, although considerable negotiation is required as regards wages.

Irish manager Martin O'Neill has had a first meeting with Stoke City, as the Premier League club look to replace Mark Hughes as manager.

The 65-year-old is keen on a return to club management after just over four years with Republic of Ireland, while Stoke feel he has the experience and nous to save them from relegation.

The Bet365 Stadium hierarchy had initially wanted Gary Rowett only for the Derby County boss to sign a new deal at Pride Park, but there would be no such issues with O'Neill since he has not yet put pen to paper on a new contract with the Football Association of Ireland and his last one has now expired.

Thursday's gossip round-up

Tottenham have started new contract talks with Dele Alli amid interest from Europe, the Mirror reports. The paper says Spurs are confident the 21-year-old will sign a new deal, with informal discussions having already taken place, despite transfer links with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsene Wenger is eyeing up Bordeaux's 20-year-old Brazilian star Malcom as a potential replacement to Alexis Sanchez, with Arsenal having already started talks with the Ligue 1 club according to the Mirror.

Manchester City have reportedly held talks with West Brom about signing defender Jonny Evans. According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are also interested in the 30-year-old, but know they would not be able to match any offer City make to Evans.

HUDDERSFIELD NEWS Huddersfield are set to sign midfielder Alex Pritchard after having an offer of around £11million accepted by Norwich, The Independent understands.
The Terriers made the significantly improved bid earlier this week after one of £5million was rejected.
Former England Under-21 international Pritchard has been open to the switch after 18 months in Norfolk and will now get his wish.
The Canaries are 13th in the Sky Bet Championship and nine points adrift of the top six after an inconsistent first season under head coach Daniel Farke.
Pritchard, 24, has made nine appearances this season and scored eight goals in 43 games for Norwich since joining from Tottenham in 2016. Huddersfield have won just two of their last 11 Premier League games and sit 11th, four points above the relegation zone. They beat Bolton 2-1 in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.
Terriers boss David Wagner previously confirmed his interest in Pritchard but insisted he would not be held to ransom.
"Pritchard is not my player, he is a Norwich player," he said.
"I like him, but I have my doubts if he will play for us because I know how expensive British players are in this window.
"If we are able to get some British players in they have to be reasonable prices. At the end it is all about quality.
"If it's one new signing with the quality to help us, good. If it's two, I'll take two. We need to be focused on the quality."
WEST HAM NEWS Francis Coquelin will leave Arsenal for Valencia in a £10.8m deal after agreeing terms on a four-and-a-half year contract with the Spanish giants, writes Ed Malyon. The 26-year-old midfielder was wanted by Premier League clubs and, in particular, West Ham United who made a big push to sign the former France Under-21 international. But Valencia's interest was made known over the weekend and Coquelin is excited about the project under Marcelino at Mestalla. After years of cycling through coaches and falling down La Liga's pecking order, Valencia have enjoyed a resurgence under the former Villarreal boss and are currently third at the halfway stage of the season. An eight-point buffer to fifth-placed Sevilla has them in a good position for Champions League qualification next year and that was a huge draw to Coquelin, who has struggled for games this season.

Roberts looking to step up his recovery

Patrick Roberts is looking to hit the ground running after returning to Celtic to step up his recovery work. The injured loan star has not featured since aggravating his hamstring against Motherwell at Fir Park back in November. He went back to parent club Manchester City for treatment but has now joined up with Brendan Rodgers' squad for their sunshine training camp in Dubai and is eyeing a swift return to action once the winter break ends. The 21-year-old told Celtic TV: "It's been good to be outside running. That was the main objective for me – to get back running while I was out here. I've been working hard in the gym over the past five or six weeks. "I want to finish the season strongly. I finished it quite well last year so that's the main objective again. I've had a tough season with injuries and it's getting right and finishing as strongly as I can. "Obviously, with the team as well, we want to get as many points as we can and win as many trophies as we can." MANCHESTER CITY NEWS There's a contingency plan in place at Manchester City if they don't sign Alexis Sanchez this month. The Manchester Evening News report that Pep Guardiola will look to deploy Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva as makeshift strikers as opposed to dipping back into the market should a deal for the Arsenal forward not materialise. Sterling played as a false nine for City in the Manchester derby last month, so it wouldn't be a completely new role for the Englishman. Former Chelsea midfielder Ramires has told Sky in Italy that he's interested in joining Inter. The Brazilian, who was part of the Blues side that won the UEFA Champions League back in 2012, is in Marbella ahead of the new Chinese Super League season with current club Jiangsu. LIVERPOOL NEWS Liverpool have emerged as the favourites to sign Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos, according to reports in Spain. The 21-year-old central midfielder moved to the Santiago Bernabéu from Real Betis last summer, for a transfer fee of around €18m. However despite his fine form last season, Ceballos has struggled to make any significant impression at Madrid, featuring in just six La Liga matches this season. And according to reports in Spain, Real Madrid are ready to cut their losses on the young player, with Liverpool at the front of the queue. But the Reds will have to move quickly if they want their man. The Real Betis president recently confirmed the club were interested in resigning Ceballos – but player registration laws in Spain mean they will have to wait until next summer before making their move. “In football it is difficult to say if something can happen or not, as anything can happen,” Betis president Angel Haro told Canal Sur. “Yes I have heard a lot of rumours but right now we are focusing on planning but I cannot give out more information, but we do have certain budget limitations. “We are trying to reinforce our most important positions and want to strengthen but in football it is not always possible for everything to work out as you want it.” Ceballos has as astronomical €500m release clause in his contract, although it is understood Madrid will be tempted into offloading the player for the same price they signed him for. STOKE NEWS Stoke City may have sacked manager Mark Hughes at the weekend but on Tuesday they signed one of his transfer targets, Austria right back Moritz Bauer. The 25-year-old defender has joined the club from Russian team Rubin Kazan on a 4-1/2 year deal for 5.5 million pounds ($7.44 million), the struggling Premier League club announced. Bauer agreed terms and had a medical last week but has now completed the move to Stoke, who sacked Hughes on Saturday after a shock FA Cup third round defeat by fourth-tier Coventry City. “Moritz is a player we have been trailing for some time and was someone Mark Hughes wanted to bring into the club,” Chief Executive Tony Scholes said on the club's website (http://www.stokecityfc.com). “Moritz came over to England last week to undergo his medical and discuss terms and we have now been able to conclude his transfer.” Stoke are in the relegation zone with 20 points from 22 matches and visit Manchester United on Monday. They will hope Bauer can help tighten up a defence that has by far the worst record in the Premier League this term with 47 goals conceded. Although Bauer represents Austria, he was born in Switzerland and started his career with Grasshoppers Zurich, making more than 90 league appearances. He joined Rubin Kazan in 2016 and played 37 league games for the Russian Premier League side. MANCHESTER UNITED NEWS Gerard Pique has moved to talk down speculation linking Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti with his former club Manchester United. “I’m not worried about what clubs might or might not do,” said Pique. “Umtiti is a great player and we expect him to stay at Barca for many more years and for him to enjoy his football with us. “To an extent, the buyout clause is made high so that you can’t buy the player. “As time goes by, that fee doesn’t seem so high at all, but the player still has to want to leave. “We’re very happy with Umtiti and I’m sure he’s going to stay here for a very long time.” LIVERPOOL NEWS Some more news on Phillipe Coutinho's move from Liverpool to Barcelona, which you may or may not have heard about over the past few days.

Liverpool 'no longer the same without' Philippe Coutinho, says Roberto Firmino

CHELSEA NEWS The Telegraph are reporting that Chelsea are willing to let Charly Musonda leave on loan. It's thought that Bournemouth, Newcastle, Watford and West Brom are all interested in the Belgian winger, who only signed a new contract until 2022 last month. Musonda scored twice for Chelsea Under-21's in their 2-1 win over Portsmouth in the Checkatrade Trophy last night, but has only made two appearances in the Premier League all season. News from the Championship as Sheffield United complete the permanent signing of Lee Evans from Wolves, and the loan signing of James Wilson from Manchester United.

CRYSTAL PALACE NEWS Sky Sports are reporting that Crystal Palace have are in talks with West Ham's Diafra Sakho. Sky in Italy claimed today that the South London club have also made a move for Fiorentina striker – and Sakho's Senegalese teammate – Khouma Babacar. Either way, it's apparent that the Eagles are searching for an attacker this window. Arda Turan will complete his move from Barcelona to Istanbul Basaksehir "on Thursday or Friday", according to head coach Abdullah Avci. ”It hasn’t been an easy transfer, Arda has been our goal for many years and I have to thank the president for this signing.” ARSENAL NEWS Are Valencia about to announce the signing of Francis Coquelin from Arsenal?

CHELSEA NEWS Arturo Vidal has dismissed rumours linking him with a move to Chelsea. Bayern Munich's Chilean midfielder admitted to knowing of the links, but insists he's committed to the German champions. "Yes, I've heard about it, but I'm fully focused on the season with Bayern and I'm only looking day-to-day," he told Sport. "We're a great team and we have big goals. We want to win every trophy. That's what my focus is." Vidal was one of Antonio Conte's first signings at Juventus, winning three consecutive Serie A titles under the now-Chelsea boss. Load more
